First Pads Bring Fire
Florida State football finally hit the field in full gear, and the energy was exactly what head coach Mike Norvell wanted to see. After three days of light work, the Seminoles put on shoulder pads for the first time this fall. According to reports, the team executed their practice approach effectively. Norvell observed the tense atmosphere, remarking that heightened emotions are typical for the first day with shoulder pads on, meaning there are a couple of things to clean up and control. This is normal for day one. The players are ready to fight, and that physical edge is exactly what wins games in September.
Freshmen Shining Bright
True freshman linebacker Izayia Williams made an instant impact that caught everyone’s eye. Williams missed his entire senior year at Tavares High School due to a torn ACL, but he is now cleared for full action. Norvell was impressed by his opening tackle drill, saying, “I mean his very first rep. I was completely covering him, describing the action as fast, powerful, and aggressive. The coach added, “He’s got the skill set, the traits. You can see there’s no hesitation.” This kind of immediate production from a rookie is rare. It signals that the depth chart is wide open for anyone who can play.
Offense Meets a Tough Defense
The offensive line showed promise in their first full-contact reps, but the defense made things very hard for them. Norvell pointed out that the group has high potential for communication and combination blocking. “I mean there were some really good IDs, some really good things where you see guys working combinations,” he said. However, the defensive front is a major problem for the offense to solve. “Obviously our defense has presented a lot of challenges, just with the explosiveness they have on the D-line,” Norvell admitted. The defensive line might not weigh 300 pounds, but they are strong and hold the point. They can knock people back without needing to move every single play.
Speed on the Second Level
The speed of the linebackers and safeties was another key takeaway from the session. Norvell liked how the unit fits the box and moves with pace. On the offensive side, freshman wide receiver Jasen Lopez stood out with three big plays. The receiver group is finally getting the matchups they missed during spring camp, with defensive backs Quindarrius Jones and Ja’Bril Rawls now fully healthy. “When you get Ja’Bril and and Duce out there, two of the best in college football, competing, it’s fun watching that,” Norvell said of Rawls and senior Duce Robinson. The tight ends also caught the coach’s eye as a group to watch closely. “I think our tight end group, that’s the group I’m really excited about,” Norvell said. “Just the speed, the fight that they show.”
Looking Toward August
The Seminoles officially reported for fall camp on Tuesday, and the clock is ticking down to the season opener. According to On3 Seminoles, Florida State opens the season on August 29 against New Mexico State in Tallahassee. SMU presents their initial major challenge on Labor Day, which falls Monday, September 7. Norvell is 38-34 in his six-year tenure at Florida State, with an ACC record of 22-26. The first day in pads proved the team has the physical tools to compete. Now they need to turn that raw energy into consistent execution before the season starts.
