Mike Norvell just told the Florida State fanbase exactly what they already know: talk is cheap. The coach made it clear that empty promises won’t fix a program that has stumbled badly. After two straight losing seasons, the only thing that will keep his job is actual wins on the field.
The Reality of a Broken Streak
Florida State has fallen hard from its recent highs. The team won 23 of 27 games between 2022 and 2023, including a 19-game win streak. That run ended with an undefeated regular season and the program’s first ACC title in nearly a decade. But the momentum vanished fast. The team missed the 2023 College Football Playoffs due to a devastating injury to starting quarterback Jordan Travis. That led to a dismal 2-10 campaign in 2024, the worst season since 1974. Now, Norvell enters the 2026 season with a record of 7-17 over the past two years per On3 Seminoles. He has dropped seven of the final nine games during a disappointing 5-7 run in 2025. That is a steep drop for a program used to national title contention.
Actions Over Empty Speeches
Norvell knows he cannot just talk his way out of trouble. He addressed the elephant in the room directly during the 2026 ACC Football Kickoff Media Days event. “In reality, the words don’t matter, it’s about the action. And that’s our focus,” Norvell said per On3 Seminoles. He admitted he could stand up and say many things, but the team must show up. The coach noted that the last two years required improvement as college football continues to evolve. He pointed out that the team showed glimpses of playing at a high level but failed to capitalize on opportunities. “So, it’s not about me giving a great speech or me trying to say the (right) things, it’s about what we’re going to show and what we’re willing to do,” Norvell concluded per On3 Seminoles. The message is simple: fans want results, not rhetoric.
The Path Forward
Norvell insists he knows the steps needed to return to glory. He believes the team has done it before, so the blueprint exists. “I know what it looks like because we’ve done it. I know the steps and I know what we need to do to get back to that level,” he stated per On3 Seminoles. He expressed confidence in what the future holds, but the timeline is tight. The fanbase is disgruntled and eager for a rapid return to former glory. A third losing season in a row would likely end his tenure. The pressure is on to turn the 2026 season around immediately. Can Norvell deliver the wins needed to silence the critics? The clock is ticking loud in Tallahassee.
